San Jose Travel Guide

San José is one of the youngest capitals of Latin America. Nowadays it's a modern city with bustling commerce, brisk expressions of art and architecture, and spurred by the country's improved tourism industry, a significant destination and stopover for foreign visitors.

About San Jose

San Jose covers an area of 3.7 sq. miles (9.47 sq. Km) and is estimated to have a population of 1.6 million people being the capital and largest city of Costa Rica, and is at the heart of the sprawling Gran Area Metropolitana or GAM in the Central Valley.

Centro Nacional de Arte y Cultura

Occupying a full city block, this was once the National Liquor Factory (FANAL). Now it houses the offices of the Cultural Ministry, several performing-arts centers, and the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design. The latter has done an excellent job of promoting cutting-edge Costa Rican and Central American artists, while also featuring impressive traveling international exhibits, including large retrospectives by Mexican painter José Cuevas and Ecuadorian painter Oswaldo Guayasamín. If you’re looking for modern dance, experimental theater, or a lecture on Costa Rican video, this a good place to check out. Allow around 2 hours to take in all the exhibits here.
